LS3/5A

The Spendor No compromise
design philosophy is born of over
thirty years of research and
development. During this time we
have gained an increased under
standing of the difficulties inherent
in moving coil loudspeaker deSIgns
and also the techniques to
overcome them. We believe this
approach of continuous technical
development and refinement has
kept Spendor loudspeakers at the
forefront of the industry as regards
accuracy and neutrality in
loudspeaker reproduction. As a
result Spendor loudspeakers have
become the professionals choice.
We believe we are unique in
having had our entire loudspeaker
range in use with broadcasters and
recording studios worldwide.

The same principles have also
been demonstrated as being
successful in the context of the
international hi-fi market. The same
loudspeakers that are used for
monitoring in the professional
environment are available to the
discerning listener who desires to
hear music and voice reproduced in
an accurate and neutral manner.

The LSB/SA

The BBC designed LS3/5A
continues to be a very effective
reproducer of sound quality. Even
though many years have passed
since its introduction into the
professional and hi-fi markets, it still
maintains its reputation for accuracy
and neutrality, and is a popular
chorce for those listeners who
want a fine but compact
loudspeaker.

The System

During the late l960s, before
Spendor was established, its
founder Spencer Hughes was still

it was at this time that he
developed the basic design for
what was to become the LSB/SA.
initially used for acoustic scaling
experiments, it was later found to
be an excellent reproducer of
normal programme material.

Some years later when Spendor
were offered the opportunity of
making the LS3/5A under licence to
the BBC, there was no hesitation in
taking on a speaker, which fully
concurs with Spendors own design
philosophy

Unlike many domestic systems.
loudspeakers used for studio
monitoring are designed to be as
accurate and as neutral as possible
The LS3/5A will provide the finest
reproduction obtainable from a
loudspeaker of its compact dimen-
sions, whether in a professional or
domestic environment.

The speakers should, where pos-
suble, be positioned away from

walls or other large flat surfaces.
Also, as the design is optimised,
they should not be used without
their grilles in position.

To obtain the sharpest possible
stereo image. each pair of LSB/SA
loudspeakers manufactured by
Spendor are matched to within ldB
over their operative range.

The Cablnet

The cabinet is constructed from
high grade l2mm birch ply with
beech battens providing the
optimum stiffness at each internal

To reduce cabinet panel reso-
nances to an acceptable minimum,
heavy damping pads are bonded
to the inside surfaces. A foam
lining provides absorption for
standing waves normally present
within the sealed cabinet.

The grille is in an open weave
fabric with good high frequency
transmission. Reflections from the
grille frame are reduced by felt
attached to the baffle.

The cabinets are finished in a
range of real wood veneers.

The Unlts

The units, manufactured by Kef
Electronics, are selected to BBC
specification to produce consistent
close tolerance pairs,

The bass unit is a 5" driver
utilising a doped bextrene cone
with a PVC surround.

The HF unit is a l9mm mylar
driver with a protective mesh grille.

The Crossover

The 15 element crossover uses
close tolerance polyester capacitors.
wirewound resistors and iron dust
cored inductors mounted on a high
grade fibre-glass printed circuit
board.

Along with the necessary filter-
ing and equalisation circuitry, the
HF section has 5 output taps in
0,5dB steps enabling an accurate
final response to be obtained with
drive units of different sensitivities.

The crossover network is
mounted on the baffle and spaced
from the HF unit by a felt pad to
reduce mechanical resonance of
the board.
