1 A-126 - Introduction A-126 - Introduction This manual covers troubleshooting procedures for the new ES series AV receivers. The STR-5000ES, 3000ES and 2000ES are the first Sony AV receivers to take advantage of the Digital Amplifier technology. The troubleshooting methodology used in this manual is in the sequence of symptom acknowledgment to board level diagnosis to component level repair . Keeping this sequence in mind as you read through the training will result in effective and efficient troubleshooting. Digital Amplifier Technology The STR-5000ES, 3000ES and 2000ES series AV receivers incorporate state of the art Digital Amplifier technology on all output channels. A\ lthough Digital Amplifiers have been around for decades, it is only recently tha\ t the technology was possible in consumer home audio component designs. What made it possible are the advancements in Digital Signal Processor (DSP), Large Scale Integration (LSI) and fast Switching Output Trans\ istor technologies. Benefits of Digital Amplifier Technology: · Elimination of any Crossover Distortions through the use of PWM signals and Low-pass filtering processes. · Substantial Heat Reduction due to the fact that the output transistors are only used for switching; they do not perform any output signal shaping processes (analog output transistors perform signal shaping). All signal shaping is performed by the low-pass filter. This also reduces thermal distortion caused by the heating and cooling sequences of the output transistors as they are driven by the audio signal. The substantial heat reduction also enables a Simpler Chassis Design . The output transistor heat sinkers are greatly reduced; there is no need for cooling fans; the isolation of the output transistors to the rear or side of the chassis is no longer necessary. Because of the increase in digital media and communications, the consumer electronics market is moving quickly towards minimization and sleeker audio equipment. These trends indicate that the market is ready\ for completely digital audio systems, an audio system that can take a digital input signal all the way to the speaker without ever converting \ it to analog. An example of this is Sonys ES series AV receivers, which a\ re covered in this manual.
