The Philips 585U (or HU) superhet.

XIENSIVE pretautions are Iaken Ln

prevent accidental shock to the user

in the Philips 585U (or HU) re-
i-eiver. and a special noisesuppression
system, assisted by the associated AVG
action, is used. The receiver is n 5Avalvo
(plus rectifier) 27band superhct designed
to operate from AC or DC mains of 2007
250 V without the necessity of voltage
adjustment.

CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION

Aerial input via isolating capacitors c1,
[)2 and coupling coils L2, L3 to (-apacitr
auce coupled bandpass filter. Primary
roils L4 {MW} and L5 (LW) are tuned
by CM); secondary coils LS (MW) and L1
(LW) are tuned by (M2. Top coupling by
(:1, and bottom coupling by (:6 (Mn) and
05 (LW).

03 is a swamp rapaciianeo, permitting
the connection of various Aerials without
imbaluneing the aerial tlTCult. R1 main
rains DC continuity between the A and E
sockets, maintaining 61 at the same DC
potential as 02.

First valve (V1, Mullsrd metallised
F013) is an octode operating as l'requency
vhangor With electron coupling. Oscilla-
tor grid coils LS (MW) anxl L9 (LW) are
tuned by (:43. Parallel tiimming by on
(MW) and 0A5 (LW); so es tracking by
cm (MW) and on (LV\ , Reaction coup-
ling from anode by mils L10 (MW) and
L11 UAW).

R7

Sutuiili valve (V2, Mullard metalllsed
VP13A) is a variable mu RF pentode
operating as intermediate-frequency
amplifier with tiniedrpriinary, tuned-
seuoiidai'y transformer coupling 046, L12,
L13, CH and 048, L14, L15, 049.

Intermediate [requency 115 kcls.

Diorle second detector 'is part of 561111!"
ate llfllllllu diode valve (V3, Mullard
metallised 2013A). Audio frequency
rmnponent in rectified output is de-
veloped across load resistors R10, R11,
that across R11 being passed via AF coup»
ling I'rIPRLiLOI (:20 and manual volume
mntrol R12 to CG of triodc valve (VII,
Mullard metallised HL13) which operates
as AF amplifier.

High-note compensation by [:19 and
R10, and bass boost by 023, R13. IF
filtering by 611 in diode circuit and 026
in V4 anode circuit. Provision for connec-
tion of gramophone pickup via isolating
capacitors 011, 022 across R12, R13.

Second diode of V3, fed from V! anode
via (:18, provides DC potential which is
deieloped across load resistor R16 and fed
back via decoupling circuits R5, (:11, R8
to V1, and R15, C to V2, giving autoA
matie volume control. Delay potential is
obtained from the drop along Rs in the
common return lead from V2 and V3
(ElEhOCIeS but it is slightly ofi-set by a posi<
live potential at the top of R16, obtained

C19 provides high-note emphasis, and 023 compensates for loss of bass at low volume levels.

from the potential divider formed by R14,
R15, R16 which is in turn shunted across
the lower liinh of an HT potential divider
R11, R121. A moviugriron meter mover
inent T.I., actuated by the anode current
of V1 and V2, operates as a tuning
meter

Fixed GB potentials for V1 and V2 are
obtained from the usual cathode resistors
also, but these too are partly offset by
positive potentials from the potential
divider R14, R15, R16, applied via the
two AVG lines to the respective control
grid Circuits. For this reason R4 is re
turned to the junction of H2, R3.

Noise suppression by variable potentirr
meter R9, to the slider of which R11 is
returned. The signal (limie can thus he
hissed from the potential along R8 to a
point at which all signalsanclurling inteip
fercnre noise, up to a given level are
muted giving silent. tuning between
strong transmissions. rliis systpm favours
strong slgllals, as the cathode potential
falls (due to falling cumin) ss clip, signal
strength increases. It is because V2
intlmdo works at a, fairly high voltage
that the potential diiiilel R1, R8 is Nelle:-
sin-y.

Resistance-capacitance coupling by-R21,
028 and choke L16, xiii grid stopper R25,
between v4 and penimle'ouiput Valve
(V5, Mullard Pen 26). Fixed tune correc-
tiuii by 025, L13, which for tonepcoi'rccr
lion purpose form a potential divider, in
the control grid circuit, and variable tone
control by R23, R24, C32 and 033 in
anode circuit. Provision for connection of
high impedance external speaker via iso-
lating capacitors 030, 031, also in anode
circuit. Switch 56 permits the internal
speaker to be muted if desired.

When the receiver is operating on AC
mains, HT curient is supplied by IHC
