SERVICE INFORMATION AND ADJUSTMENTS

TAPE CARTRIDGE CARE

To assure maximum lite and noise free
operation, tapes should be stored in a
cool, clean and dry place, out of the
rays of the sun and with the open
(tape end) down.

CHANNEL SWITCHING

Since the prerecorded tape has four
dual tracks (8 single tracks) and since
the tape head can only use two tracks
at a time, a means is provided to allow
the head to be moved up or down to
one of four different p05itions with
respect to the tape. The sequence of
head movement is as follows:

Tracksl &5,2&6,3&7,4&8,1&
5, etc. (see detail).

The positioning of the head can be
accomplished either manually or
automatically. Manual positioning is
accomplished whenever the track
selector switch (E5) is pushed in and
released. The shorting of this switch
causes the spring loaded shaft on the
solenoid E3 to pull in for an instant;
when the shaft returns to its original
position, it actuates the ratchet end of
the cam and shaft assembly to detent
to its next position. In contact with

the other end of the cam and shaft
assembly (irregularily shaped at that
end) is the tape head transfer pin
(located beneath the head) which
moves the head up or down.

Movement of the head to the next
dual track will be done automatically
by the tape itself when the end of a
dual track is reached. The prerecorded
tape has, at the end of the recorded
programs, a strip of conductive tape
which shorts out switch E4 which is in
direct contact with the tape at all
times. This starts the same sequence of
action which occurred when the track
selector switch was pushed in as
described above (see detail).

TAPE PLAYER SERVICE NOTES

PROPER DRlVE BELT
lNSTALLATlON . Make certain that
whenever the motor drive belt is
removed, the rough surface of the
drive belt is on the inside when the
belt is reinstalled later. The rough
surface of the belt must drive the
flywheel. On belts having a stripe,
install the belt with the stripe on the
outside,

As part of a regular cleaning
procedure, clean the motor pully and
flywheel drive surfaces with isopropyl

alcohol.

TAPE CARTRIDGES . Before
servicing the tape player portion of
this unit, always check for the
possibility of a defective prerecorded
tape cartridge, particularly if one is
returned with the unit. This should be
done by substituting the tape cartridge
with one that is known to be good,

TAPE HEAD CLEANING

One major cause of improper tape
player operation (regardless of type of
player) is oxide buildaup on the head.
This accumulation of oxide can cause
poor playback and some up and down
tape travel. The head, track switch and
drive capstan should be cleaned
whenever the unit is serviced and this
can be done either in the home or on
the service bench. To clean the head,
use a cotton swab as shown in Figure 2
moistened with head cleaner or
isopropyl alcohol, then wipe dry. Also
clean leaf contacts on track switch
(E2).

CAUTlON should be exercised when
cleaning playback head to prevent
getting cleaner on any plastic parts. A
commercial head cleaning tape may
also be used.
