PLACEMENT OF THE KHO-7
There are a number of a pplications where the Klipsch
KHO-7 is the perfect solution for outdoor sound -
patios, decks, swimming pools, porches or any other
place where exposure to the elements makes
conventional loudspeaker usa ge unacceptable.
Man y of the placement recommendations for indoor use
also apply in outdoor a pplications. The most common
difference is the desire or need to mount the speakers
a bove ear level on a wall or under an overhang. T o
achieve the best perf ormance from your KHO-7, place
both speakers on the same wall facing the listening
area and space them six to 15 feet a part. For a higher
quality stereo ima ge, angle down, or toe in, the speak -
ers toward the primar y listening area. This is especiall y
important in installations tha t place the speaker well
a bove ear level. Some additional bass will result if you
place the speakers in a corner or near a wall: This pro -
vides g reater bass coupling due to the additional
ref lected energy from the walls.
W ALL MOUNTING
Included with your KHO-7 speakers are C-style
mounting brackets tha t provide tremendous placement
flexibility . Constructed of weather -resistant powder -coa t-
ed aluminum to ensure years of relia ble ser vice, these
brackets are the recommended method of mounting
and supporting your speakers. The bracket is attached
to the speaker with the supplied low profile knobs,
which thread into the top and bottom of the ca binet.
This allows the speaker to be angled to the left or right
when mounted verticall y , or up and down when
mounted horizontall y .
After determining the desired location and orienta tion of
your KHO-7, remove the bracket from the loudspeaker
and use it as a templa te to mark the location of the
mounting holes. Check the alignment of the holes with
a torpedo level before drilling the properl y sized pilot
hole at the marked loca tions. Use #10-12, 2.5-3" long
pan head screws to a ttach the bracket into a wall stud.
Af fix the speaker to the bracket with the supplied
knobs. Be sure to leave enough clearance between the
end of the bracket and an y adjacent wall or ceiling for
installation of the knobs.
If a wall stud is not a vaila ble, use the a ppropria te type
of dr ywall or masonr y anchor to support the weight of
the speaker , allowing for a generous safety marg in.
Please consult your dealer , custom installer or building
contractor in these situa tions.
USE OF THE PORT PLUG
A vin yl port plug is included for installa tions that ma y
expose the KHO-7 to extremel y wet wea ther conditions.
The internal components are wa ter -resistant, however , it
is best to a void having standing wa ter inside the ca binet
whenever possible. T o insert the plug, gentl y pry off the
metal g rille taking care not to bend it or chip the paint.
Insert the closed end of the plug into the port until the
fit is snug. DO NOT use excessive force! Use of the port
plug will result in a slight loss in the bass frequencies,
but will make your speakers more wea ther -resistant
and ensure a long and trouble-free life.
HOW T O CONNECT THE KHO-7
Switch your electronics OFF when making all connec -
tions! Connect your KHO-7 all-wea ther speakers to the
Front or Main left and right channels of your sys -
tem s power amplifier . Be sure to obser ve proper polari -
ty (+ to + and - to -) and a void ha ving excess bare
wire at the connectors, which could short together
causing possible amplifier dama ge. Refer to About
Speaker Wire Connections.
ABOUT SPEAKER WIRE CONNECTIONS
When making an y type of speaker wire connection, be
sure to obser ve proper polarity . Most speaker wire is
color -coded or has some distinguishing feature dif feren -
tia ting the two conductors. Speaker wire connectors on
most loudspeakers and amplifiers are also color -coded.
T ypicall y , Red is positive (+) and Black is negative (-), or
g round. It does not matter which wire conductor is con -
nected to the positive or nega tive connection of your
equipment as long as you are consistent. Be sure tha t
the connections from the amp to the speaker on all of
the various channels of your system are connected in a
like manner . If this is not done, the amount of bass will
be reduced and the stereo ima ge will be compromised.
Be careful not to ha ve excess bare wire or loose
strands of wire that could short from positive to nega -
tive as this could dama ge the speaker and amplifier .
High quality speaker ca ble can make an audible
improvement in the sound of your speakers. Y our
Klipsch dealer can assist you in selecting the proper
ca ble to ensure optimal perf ormance from your loud -
speakers.
P AINTING Y OUR KHO-7
The grille and cabinet of your KHO-7 ma y be painted to
ma tch the exterior decor of your house or to blend in
with the surrounding environment. For best results,
properly prepare the surface before painting. Lightl y
sand all surfaces to be painted (ca binet and g rille) with
300-400 grit sand paper . W ash these surfaces with a
moistened cloth dipped into a mild detergent to remove
any fingerprints or g rease. Allow to dr y before painting.
Care must be taken to mask of f the front of the speaker
to protect the tweeter , woofer and front panel from
over -spra y . This will maintain the existing uniform dark
color behind the g rille and protect the woofer and
tweeter from being dama ged by the paint. Affix masking
tape to the inboard wall of the g rille g roove and attach
plastic or newspa per to the tape to cover the entire
front panel of the speaker . Also before painting, mask
the speaker wire binding posts on the rear of the ca bi -
net to preser ve the color -coding and conductivity . Make
sure tha t the black and red knobs are screwed down to
cover the threaded metal shafts and wra p the knobs
securel y in masking ta pe.
Remove the g rille before painting. For best results, use
several light coats of paint instead of one hea vy coat.
This will help prevent the perf orations in the grille from
becoming clog ged with paint.
