Power Amplifiers

The power amplifier selected should have very low harmonic and in-
termodulation distortions, the frequency response should be very wide, and
it should exhibit high stability under loudspeaker load.

If the amplifier selected has a variable damping factor, this should
be set for maximum damping Laboratory tests have shown that a low
damping factor will degrade the sound of the JansZen electrostatic, and
extenswe listening tests have indicated that all of the recommended
woofers perform better with an amplifier having a high damping factor.

The power output required of the amplifier will depend on the desired
listening levels, size of the room, acoustic conditions, etc. In general, a
GOOD 20 watt amplifier can be used for many listening purposes, but any
ampliiier up to 100 watts can safely be used on integrated music material,

Preamplifier:
Low distortion and wide frequency range are just as important in pre
amplifier-control units as in power amplifiers. If the maximum allowable

intermodulation distortion of a power amplifier is l% (at rated output),
then the distortion of the complete preamplifier should be less than O.l %
at sufficient voltage to drive the amplifier to full output,

Pickup Cartridges

Law distortion and smooth frequency response in phonograph cart-
ridges ore very important, especially so with the advent of stereophonic
records, in which there are very complex groove forms. The cartridge
should have equally high compliance in both lateral and vertical planes
(at least for stereo), and have a resonance frequency (between the dyn-
argti: mass of the stylus assembly and the vinylite groove wall) above
