Careofyourturlridge

superb results and years of good service providing reasonable care

is taken with its installation and use. Although its construction is
fairly rugged. nevertheless a precision product deserves careful
installation and handling.

5" centres designed to fit most heail shells. The bracket fixing holes

Solder connections should be made to the tags supplied with the head
shells but soldering must not be tione while the tags are connected
to the bracket pins. To obtain l5" (racking angle the top of the
cartridge should be parallel to the record surface.

Figure 2 shows how the head fits to the bracket. i.e. the head slides on
and off the bracket.

brushed away with a soft camel hair brush from the rear towards the
front ofthe cartridge. When brushing hold the cartridge vertically as
shown in figure 3 so that dust and luff will not be pushed into the
magnetic gap or into the lateral coil.

* Playing weight

The specification of your London cartridge is that obtained with a
playing weight of LS grams, but playing weight is determined to some
extent by the quality of the pick-up arm and the amount of friction in
the bearings. While it is quite possible to use a playing weight of less
than |.S grams it is unnecessary and not recommended.

* Tobinsornoflebias

A pick-up cartridge has a natural tendency to skate" towards the
centre ofthe record but is restrained from doing so by the inside
groove wall. This tendency can cause uneven stylus wear and will
often affect the separation betwev n channels. Use ofa bias
compensator not only averts uneven stylus wear but can also improve
quality. To obtain the highest performance with your new pick-up
cartridge we therefore recommend that some form of bias
compensation be applied.

. Stylus «are

The diamond stylus in your cartridge is suitable for use with all types
of microgroove records whether stereo or mono. It is not. however,
suitable for use with 78 rpm records. The cartridge should
occasionally be taken off the arm and any accumulation offluff

Given reasonable consideration your stylus will have an extremely
long life but we recommend that ou make use of the services
available to you by sending the cajtridge back to Decca of England

for inspection each year (or everyother year dependent upon its use).
The stylus will be examined and tlle performance of the cartridge
checked. Pack the cartridge caref lly in the container supplied and
send it back to us for inspection henever you suspect damage or
wear.

. Contact tonnetiions

Your ffss cartridge is what is kno 'n as a "sum-and-difference
pick-up" so that various coils are nter-related as shown in figure 5.
Viewing the cartridge from the c ntact end. a small flat contact will be
observed sited adjacent to the ea th pin. This is the connection shown
in figure 4 as D and is a test point sed only in the manufacturing
processes. On no account should .ny 'conneCtion be made to it.

Figure 4, shows the internal circu t ofthe pick-up and a diagram of
the head sh0wing the three sprin contacts.

For a mono installation. left and ght-hand pin connections should
be parallelled.
