Pick-up Arm

Type SAU4

OPERATING AND INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

Page 2

The prime objective of this arm is to reduce the effective
mass to a minimum. Also, the friction of the pivot, both
lateral and vertical, must be extremely low and viscous
damped. This damping allows greater control of arm res-
onance, to cope with high-compliance cartridges now on
the market. The counter balance weight is de-coupled from
the arm assembly. The pick-up arm signal wires are extremely
light so as to avoid unwanted side pressures which will affect
good bias control. Bias pressure is applied by a nylon thread
and weight. Three weights are supplied, of different sizes, so

a combination can be used to cover all requirements. A

lateral outrigger with a fine threaded arm and weight allows
exact balance of the arm on the unipivot to be achieved. A
ball spirit level is mounted above the unipivot mounting to
give a visual indication when exact balance is obtained. The
down force is applied by a sliding weight on the arm tube,
and this is calibrated from O to 4 grams. A lightweight metal
headshell is fitted as standard, this being detachable.
Cartridges of 1/2" fixing centre can be accommodated, and

a protractor is supplied to set for minimum tracking error.

An arm lift is provided which is viscous damped. The top

of the quadrant arm is fitted with a special rubber pad to
avoid drift when the arm is raised and lowered. Only a single
hole fixing is required to mount the pick-up arm to the
turntable platform.

SETTING FOR DOWNFORCE PRESSURE AND
LATERAL BALANCE

This pick-up is fitted with a ball spirit level above the
unipivot mountings and this is used to obtain visual
indication of perfect balance. The following steps must be
carried out, and in this order:-

1 The pick-up raising and lowering handle must be in the
down" position (Diagram 2(8) - and the DiCk-Up arm
should not be resting on the quadrant. No bias weight
must be applied at this stage.

2 Set the downforce pressure weight on the arm to zero
(Diagram 2(A) and then screw the back counter balance
weight (Diagram 2(C) until the arm is in balance and the
ball in the spirit level (Diagram 2(H) is in the centre, in
a forward to backward direction only.

3 Place a record on the turntable and rest the cartridge
stylus on the record surface. Move the downforce
weight (Diagram 2(A) to the pressure recommended by
the cartridge manufacturer. Slacken the 4BA grub screw
(Diagram 2(D) on the pick-up mounting base and raise
or lower the pick-up stem (Diagram 2(Kl to bring the
spirit level ball (Diagram 2(H) once again to the
centre, in the forward to backward position.

4 With the STYLUS STILL RESTING ON THE RECORD,
adjust the lateral balance weight (Diagram 2(l) so that
the ball spirit level (Diagram 2(H) is now brought into
the exact centre in all directions, and a perfect balance
is obtained. (An extra small weight is supplied to be
added, if necessary).

NOTE: If different downforce pressures are applied, re-
adjustment of lateral balance will be necessary.

CONNECTION TO AMPLIFIER

The pick-up connecting leads are normally terminated with
Phono plugs (DIN plugs can be supplied if requested). If
Phono plugs are fitted, the black lead should be connected
to the left input socket of the amplifier and the white lead
to the right input socket. A separate earth Wire is provided
and this should be secured firmly to an earthing point on
the amplifier. If a DIN plug is fitted, this should simply be
plugged into the correct input socket of the amplifier, and
this is automatically earthed through the screening of the
plug.

If the pick-up is mounted in such a way that it is insulated
from the turntable, then the turntable should be earthed
through the extra earth tag on the pick-up base locking
nut, taking care that the earthing screw is fastened tightly
against the pick-up base.
