Connoisseur Pickup Arm Type SAU 2

This pickup arm is a precision instrument and requires rarefui installation and handling it the lull performance
of which it is capable is to be realised.

FIXING INSTRUCTIONS. Use the template provided to ensure minimum tracking error. With point A on the
template centmd on the turntdble centre spindle pmition point B on the mounting board to ensure that sufficient
clearance is ailO'Md for the back sweep ut the arm in the playing positron and for the lifting handle to be used. At
point B ("til at /16" (17.5mm) diameter hole through which to pass the threaded slum of the pickup base. Secure
the base firmly in position, tightening the locking nut sricurelv,so that the base cannot rotate. The correct tracking
distance from the centre of the turntable to the centre of the pickup base is 7]t." i199mm.l.

HEIGHT ADJUSTMENT. Slacken the set screw in the pickup base and slide the arm to the reguired height, :12.
such that the arm in the playing position is horizontal. Before locking the sat screw, position the arm so that when
on the arm rest it is clear of the edge of the record (12"). This will ensure that the lifting dcvrcté operates over the
whole playing arc.

PICK-UP ARM ALIGNMENT. The pickup arm has been designed with the pivots at 45° to the horizontal. This
makes it possible to have a simple. robust and frtCtion tree method of obtaining anti skating bias. Also the wiring
is able to go straight down the middle of the pickup stem (where there would normaliv be a pivot screw) so
virtually eliminating any tortional twist due to the wires.

This arrangement has the effect of causing a slight rocking of the head shell. When the pickup is on the arm rest the
outer side of the head shell will be tilted uphill. As the pickup moves to its playing position on the record the head
shell will level off and should remain virtually level (within 11°) whilst playing. As the pickup goes to the
centre of the record the head shell again tilts uphill on the omsrde.

It the pickup arm is set correctly u- with the outer gimbal ring at right angle: to the line joining the pickup to tho
centre of the playing band of the record. the. rocking effect of the head shell will have u negligible effect on thr:
performance of the arm and cartridge. .

FIXING CARTRIDGE TO HEAD SHELL. The shell is suitable for all standard mrtridgres with '/2" fixing centres.
The pickup arm is now fitted with a head shell which allows lateral adjustment of the cartridge- to 9W9 "It'llmum
tracking error.

To fit the cartridge remove the aluminium label from the head shell, connect the rartridgt: as follows:

White lead I: left live.
Red lead is right live.
Blue lead is left screen.
Green lead is right screen.

Select the correct length 83A screws and insert these through the square washers and then through the slots in
the head shell. Secure the cartridge with the nuts. adtusting it according to the instructions on the alignment
protractur. Finally refit the label.

CONNECTION TO THE AMPLIFIER. A complete cable assembly is provided with a five pin side entry plug to
the pickup base. The two screened cables are terminated by phono plugs, the grey plug being the Right Hand
channel. the black plug being the Left Hand channel, The separate earth lead shOuld be connected to the pre
amplifier chassis. If the pickup is mounted in such a way that it is insulated from the turntable, then the turntable
should be earthed through the extra earth tag on the locking nut, taking care that the earthing screw is fastened
tightly against the pickup base.

ADJUSTING TRACKING WEIGHT. Adjust the tracking weight using the precision balance. Place the balance on
the turntable and the pickup stylus :n the hollow in the centre of the scale pan. Set the balance weight so that its
groove indicates the required playing weight. Adjust the pickup weight by screwing the large black counterbalance
weight until the scale arm is horizontal. W=!h a light cartridge it may be necessary to remove the additional weight
at the rear of the pickup arm.

BIAS ADJUSTMENT. The bias compensator corrects the skating" effect or inward pull dur- ii the offset of the
DiCkUD head and the friction between the stylus and record. The friction is directly proportional to tho pidying
weight, therefore the bias weight requnes adjusting. The sliding weight on the bias lever enables the amount to be
varied. For a playing weight of 3 grams the bias weight should be as lar forward as pos5ible and for a playing weight
of l'/; grams the weight should be as far back as possible. An additional small weight is supplied which shOuld be
substituted for the larger weight when usmg lower tracking weights. This is sortable for weights betwecn 3/. gram -
IV, grams. The plastic pip at the end of the lever is easily removable for changing the weights.

LIFTING DEVICE. The lifting dewce is locked in the correct position. and the lrJIC of fall is preset at the factory.

STEM EXTENSION. A stem extension is available to enable the pickup arrT to he used With high turntables ~
up to 273" above the m0unting board.
