Wiring procedure

It is essential that the speakers be connected
correctlyto the amplifier. ie, red terminal to
red and black to black, as for stereo
reproduction, correct phasing is absolutely
essential.

For connecting the speakers choose a twin
cable rated at not Iessthan 5 amp and colour
coded in order to facilitate correct polarity.
Connections to the speaker terminals may
be made by either 4mm plugs, or byspade
terminals or stripped cable ends, Ensure
that terminal screws are secure before use.

Loudspeaker positioning
ldeallythespeakers should be placed
approximately 8-10 feet (2.53.0 metres)
apart and because of the interaction ofthe
loudspeakers and your room it is advisable
to experiment with various loudspeaker
locations.

To assist you in choosing a suitable position
the next section deals with the effect various
configurations have on the output from a
loudspeaker.

The following three conditions show how
the various boundaries affect the power
outputfrom a loudspeaker. The first case has
a single boundary below the loudspeaker at
400mm from the sound source

Moving the loudspeakerclosetoa wal|.so
that the sound source Is an equal distance
from the floor and wall, will increase the low
frequency output as shown below.

However, if we now placethe loudspeaker
an equal distance from two walls and the
floor we will have a situation in which a
considerable amount of bass boost is
produced but at the expense of a severe loss
of information in the lower mid range.

These three cases clearly show how
important the location of your loudspeaker
Can be. By placing the loudspeaker near

to a wall the second curve shows the
increase in bass output with an accom»
panying small loss of lower mid»range
(200-500H2) energy.This is usually quite
acceptable in a normal domestic environ-
ment but, placing the loudspeaker in the
corner ofa room, equidistant from all the
boundaries as shown in the third curve
should always be avoided. However, a
cornerlocation can be made acceptable by
positioning the loudspeaker so that it is an
unequal distance (but at least 400 mm) from
each boundary.

In a domestic environment the situation is
complicated by the consideration of
ceilings, other walls and furniture with
varying reflective characteristics. It is,
therefore important to consider all of these
interactions when trying various locations.
A little effort in optimising the position ofa
loudspeaker can pay considerable dividends
in sound quality.

Some floor standing loudspeakers such as
the Ditton 662 are designed with the sound
source approximately 400 mm from the floor
and do not normally need to be placed on a
stand.

Attractive stands are available to enhance
the performance and appearance of
Celestion loudspeakers.
